EPM Research
We are the Engineering Project Management (EPM) research group at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. EPM Research is led by its current Chair Dr. Pouya Zangeneh with the mandate to conduct core research that elevates the industry.
History of EPM Endowment
Established in 1993 through the pioneering vision of Professor Francis Hartman, the Endowment for Project Management at the University of Calgary was a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing research, education, and practical solutions in project management.
This collective effort was designed to address critical challenges in project management, such as reducing implementation inefficiencies and mitigating risks associated with technological change. The Endowment laid the foundation for innovative research and training programs, emphasizing pragmatic approaches to enhance the competitiveness of Canadian industry.
Vision and Mission
More than 30 years later, the construction and engineering project management industry once again finds itself grappling with persistent challenges of inefficiencies and adapting to technological change. The evolving scope of projects now incorporates Environmental, Social, and Governance considerations and complexities. While, the rise of AI has significantly influenced many business processes. The legacy of this visionary initiative remains strong.
We redefined our vision to becoming,
Efficient and Accessible Research Arm in Construction and Project Management for the Canadian Industry.
Our research and educational mission centers on,
Understanding the evolving complexities of projects, and,
Leveraging AI and analytics to de-risk and deliver across project portfolios.
EPM Research Letters
This website, and research letters, serves as our medium for distributing our ideas, sharing early results of our research, and posing questions we encounter to the broader “Projects” community and our network within the Engineering Project Management industry.
Projects are often large complex systems across technical, environmental, social, economic and increasingly political boundaries. They are a primary mode of development in the world. Whether you are an Engineer, Project Manager, or other professional within the broad project delivery value chain, we share the same goal of responsible and sustainable development, and we all have a lot to learn about projects, their prevalence, and their challenges.
